Historic Landmark Lost to Fire
The Osmund Woodard/Buchanan House, located at 225 S. Congress Street, was severely damaged in a fire on Monday, October 28th. Fortunately, the owner, Mr. Al Sanders, was able to escape unharmed, but he lost his pet in the fire. The house was built in the early part of the 1850s and was owned by Mr. Osmund Woodard. The house was then given to his daughter, Claudia Rebecca, when she married Dr. Robert Augustus Buchanan. Later, the house became was known as the famous Winnsboro Female Seminary, under the leadership of Mr. and Mrs. George and Catherine Ladd. Mrs. Ladd was a well-known educator, entrepreneur, and author in the South from 1808-1899--before and after the Civil War.
