Senior Spotlight

Lloyd McGriff is the son of the late John and Cora Henry McGriff. He joined St. John AME Church in Winnsboro, SC and has been an active member for more than eighty years of his life. Over several decades, he has faithfully served in several capacities in his church, which include Steward, Trustee, and Chairman of the Trustee Board.

He was educated at Fairfield High School, Class of 1947, and Voorhees Junior College (Denmark, SC). Mr. Lloyd McGriff was the first African American to serve on the Fairfield County School Board of Trustees in the 1960’s. America’s climate in the struggle for social justice and civil rights created a great need to bridge the inequality gap, especially in the South. His calm demeanor allowed him to work with the Board and effectively communicate the need for African-American students.

During Mr. McGriff ’s tenure on the Board, he made the recommendation for two individuals to integrate the first high school in the Fairfield County School District: Mrs. Maude Ford Ross and Mrs. Mamie Rabb Young. Subsequently, other African American teachers joined the faculty and continued to inspire students throughout the Fairfield County community and beyond. During his career spanning nearly 60 years, he diligently worked in building construction, proudly served in the United States Army, and joined the Prince Hall Fraternal Brotherhood of Masons. One of his most cherished memories was working to build the Sunday school addition to St. John AME Church. Throughout the years of his career, Mr. McGriff has established lasting bonds of friendship with people from all walks of life.

Today, he remains an avid sports and news enthusiast. Other activities he enjoys include attending his senior center frequently, class/family reunions, and church revivals at St. John AME. Mr. McGriff and his family recently established the annual Lloyd and Vivian McGriff Education Scholarship to enrich the educational future of a Fairfield Central High School graduate.

Mr. McGriff was married to the late Vivian Rabb McGriff of Jenkinsville, SC. He has two married children, the Reverend Dr. Lloyd T. McGriff (Monica) and Mrs. Conchetta McGriff-Belgrave (Carl) and four grandchildren.
