FMSMS shares in the Spirit of Giving
As we embark on the season of giving, the faculty and staff at Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science have chosen to partner with the BattleBetty Foundation. Over the holiday season, the BattleBetty Foundation works to provide care packages for women veterans. Th e Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science faculty and staff worked to help support this cause by collecting items that can be included in the care packages. The faculty and staff of FMSMS donated various items, such as hygiene products, hats, gloves, socks, stuffed animals, and other comfort items. All items collected were given to the BattleBetty Foundation to help with their cause of helping women veterans.
With the support of compassionate family members and guidance from steadfast mentors, Marine Corps Veteran, DeAndria L. Hardy, founded a nonprofit organization with a vision to help women veterans like herself. In 2017, after moving back to the Upstate, DeAndria noticed there were no support systems or services specifically to address the needs of women veterans trying to adjust to life aft er the military. So, instead of simply lamenting on the problem, she began setting the groundwork for a remedy to the lack of services.
In August 2018, with a mission to serve and empower women veterans, Th e BattleBetty Foundation came to fruition. Since its inception, the BattleBetty Foundation has worked within the Spartanburg community to provide needed direct services for women veterans. Through their Peer Support Program, an Outreach Program, and Case Management, The BattleBetty Foundation strives to promote positive outcomes in the areas of health and wellness, stability, and re-integration into civilian life. In furthering their impact, plans are currently in the works to open a Women Veterans Transitional Home.
