There are currently one-hundred twenty-nine Lions Clubs throughout South Carolina, totaling more than thirty-three hundred members. While Lions International is the largest volunteer service organization in the world--with over 1.4 million members in over two hundred nations--the club level is where community service takes place.
The Winnsboro Lions Club was chartered in 1935 and will celebrate its eighty-fifth anniversary this year. Over the years, the club has provided eye exams and glasses to many county citizens needing assistance. The club also recycles used eyeglasses and collects these with donation boxes placed in popular locations, or any member will gladly accept donated gently-used eyeglasses. Also, we have already conducted over 1,200 vision screenings in six of our public schools and the Midlands STEM School this year; we will screen Richard Winn Academy students this semester.
The Winnsboro Club raises funding through its annual “Rann Foster Pancake Supper.” This year the supper will be held Monday, February 3rd, at Fairfield Elementary School, on the north end of the US 321 ByPass, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tickets for adults are $5 and are $4 for children ten and under; ticketsare available from any Winnsboro Lion or at the door. Each year the Club serves some 350 plates and take outs.
A second fundraiser is the annual “Night for Sight,” held each August at the Doko Manor in Blythewood, in partnership with two other area clubs. Lions also sell brooms and accept financial donations and memorials. Lions candy dispensers are located in select businesses, as well.
“Our club has a long record of devoted community service to Fairfield County citizens, and during this decade, we are concentrating on reducing hunger, educating about diabetes, addressing childhood cancer, working on environmental issues, and preserving sight,” club president Bobbie Dove said. “Visitors are always welcome to attend our first and third Tuesday noon meetings at the China Buffet in the CVS/KJs strip mall,” she added.
