Senior Spotlight 8/16

Story by: Trenell Boyd

Mrs. June E. Slater is a lady who always has a smile on her face, joy in her heart, and a spring in her step! Since the age of eleven, Mrs. Slater had always dreamed of becoming a part of WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), a unit of the U.S. Naval Reserve. After seeing her WAVES neighbors and all the nice things they had, she was determined to join after graduating high school. During this time, the age requirement was twenty-one, and when Mrs. Slater went to be recruited, she found out she had to wait three more years; it left her devastated.

However, while listening to music and ironing one day, she heard the news that the Navy was accepting high school graduates. She immediately called her friend and told her the good news, and then they decided to join together! The Navy offered her so many opportunities, and she even met her late husband in Bainbridge, Maryland. They had 3 beautiful children, 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one on the way!

Ms. Slater says she has love all around her, that’s what keeps her alive. “Love is all around. Life is worth living,” she expressed. She is the only person in her family who has lived to the age of 86, and she declares that she still drives in the fast lane on the interstate with everybody else!

Mrs. Slater believes that everything begins and ends with Jesus. She says, “All things are possible with God. Faith works, even if you’re only an eleven-year-old girl!”

Lastly, Mrs. Slater shared that she wants to be remembered as a woman who made a decision a long time ago to never meet a stranger. She loves everyone!
