The Fairfield Central High School (FCHS) Beta Club traveled to Myrtle Beach to compete in the South Carolina Beta Club Convention on February 8-10th. Beta Club is a national organization to promote academic achievement, service, character, and leadership, to students in fourth through twelfth grade.
The FCHS Beta Club has always upheld the idea of Lead by Serving Others. They have done numerous hours of community service in and outside Fairfield County. But one of the highlights of the club’s year is being able to attend and compete with other Betas from all over the state.
The FCHS Beta Club has participated in the state convention since 2010. They have won a few competitions over the years, but have really kicked it in high gear since 2017. During that convention, they earned the following awards: 1st place Show Choir, the Gold Key Award, 1st Banner, 3rd Speech (Jamara Green), and Lamar Richards became the SC State Beta Club president. Due to these great accomplishments, they were invited to compete at the National Convention in Orlando, FL that summer. Although they didn’t win any awards, they brought home a great experience and expectations for the next year’s competition.
The students were excited to continue this endeavor and qualify for nationals again. They worked extremely hard to do well in the 2018 SC State Convention. They were not disappointed, our school placed 1st in Show Choir, 1st in Speech Division 2 (Jamara Green), 2nd in Math Division (Janiece Jackson), 3rd in Robotics, 3rd in Banner, and the Gold Key Award. These accomplishments allowed the Speech, Banner, Show Choir, and our Robotics Team to compete at the National Convention again, which was held in beautiful Savannah, Georgia. Unlike the first time they competed at this level, they did in fact place as National Finalist in Show Choir and Speech competitions.
This group of hard-working and dedicated students did not easy up, this year they enter competitions they have never done in the past and wanted to defend the great accomplishments of the previous year. The FCHS Beta Club was so successful, they left the state convention with nine titles. We once again have the honor of having our school represent the entire state with Nathaniel “Nate” Adams as the SC Beta Club state president. Nate’s great speech, charisma, confidence really shown through at the convention. He became the second FCHS student to become SC Beta Club president in the last three years.
On top of that great win, the school continued to show they are a force to be reckoned with by placing in eight more competitions to include: Runner Up for Best Campaign Skit. 2nd place Show Choir, 1st place Ninth grade Social Studies (Joshua Mobley), 3rd place Speech Division 2 (Jamara Green), 2nd place Robotics, 1st place Two Dimensional Design, 3rd place Freshman Problem Solving, and 3rd place Problem-Solving Scenario. We can not forget to mention that the FCHS Group Talent put on a passionate tribute to the late Sammy Cornelius, leaving the audience filled with emotion. It is safe to say that the FCHS Beta Club left with a triumph victory this year. Because of their awards, the Beta Club is able to attend the National Beta Club Convention, which is being held in Oklahoma City, OK this summer. There is no doubt the students for Fairfield Central will represent the state of South Carolina with pride. We wish you good luck and safe travels.
