Foundation Provides Student Scholarships
Over 10 years ago, Ms. Sylvia Harrison began Sylvia’s Foundation, an organization whose purpose is to provide scholarships to graduating Fairfield County students. Ms. Harrison recognizes the need for helping students, particularly for high school seniors to offset the cost of college.
The number of scholarships awarded is based on the amount of funds raised during its annual scholarship gala. In 2017, Ms. Harrison was able to give ten scholarships to graduating seniors. Currently, the foundation awards 12 scholarships in the amount of $500 every year. Ten scholarships will be awarded in 2019 to Fairfield Central High School seniors and two scholarships will be awarded to Richard Winn Academy seniors.
Every scholarship has its requirements, and this one is no different. Along with the application being filled out and turned in, the applicant must write a 250 words narrative stating, “Why I think it is important to go to college,” a college acceptance letter, two letters of recommendation (one from current or past teacher and from someone other than a relative), and a written statement from a parent, guardian, or school guidance counselor expressing that a financial need is required.
In February of each year, Ms. Harrison holds a gala to support the scholarship. Extra funds are raised by the advertisements placed in the gala’s souvenir booklet, along with donations. Once students have applied, the scholarship recipients are chosen by a committee. For more information contact Ms. Sylvia Harrison at firstname.lastname@example.org.
