Janiece Jackson

Jackson finalist for Gates Scholarship

Story by: Tracie SwilleyFCHS Principal

On Friday, March 15, 2019, while all other students in Fairfield County had the opportunity to sleep-in, Janiece Jackson was preparing for one of the most important interviews of her life. Janiece made it to the interview round as a finalist for the Gates Scholarship. Six hundred students from across the country make it to this interview round. Only three hundred will be selected and awarded the esteemed scholarship. According to the Gates Scholarship website, “The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective, full scholarship for exceptional, Pell-eligible, minority, high school seniors.” Janiece’s interview was conducted at 10:00 am in the Success Center of Midlands Tech at Fairfield Central High School. Jackson was all smiles after the interview and felt she did well. Her interview was based on her essays written as a part of the application process.

Janiece is currently ranked #1 in the senior class. This is not a new rank for her, as Janiece has held the number one spot since entering high school. Janiece is also a member of the STEM Early College Academy Cohort #2 and will graduate on May 8, 2019 with an Associate Degree in Science from Midlands Technical College. This esteem event is exactly one month before graduating from high school on June 8, 2019 at 8:30 am.

Janiece can often be found, in the school and community, tutoring students of all ages. She understands the importance of helping others to succeed and is willing to help at any time. Janiece is also very active with the Beta Club and has placed at the state convention in the area of mathematics for the last two years. Janiece is an exceptional student and deserves all awards and accolades that she has attained and will achieve. When the 300 winners are announced in April, we are hoping Janiece Jackson will be on the list.
