Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss

Reading is the key to success, which is why it is important to encourage our children and adults to read as much as they can. Reading not only enable us to groom our intelligence, but also helps in making us aware of our surroundings, history, and their importance. Some people may think that the advancement in technology deters the current generation from reading, however, it does quite the opposite. Technology actually provides a more efficient way of accessing books. In addition, books are now available on different mediums which make them more accessible to a greater fraction of the population. When technology is associated with reading, the immediate thought is that people are less likely to read because the television provides similar information. To preserve the culture of reading, an event is held annually in commemoration of Dr. Seuss. The name of the event is, Read Across America.

Read Across America dates back to the year of 1998. It was created to bring awareness to reading and celebrate the effects that reading has on our world. In a world where technology seems to develop at a fast pace, it is really important the we utilize it properly and are sure to incorporate reading within our daily activities. The event was created by the National Education Association (NEA). As stated by their website, the purpose was, “Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers,” The main goal is to encourage children to read as a fun hobby rather than a chore. They believe that just as a pep rally is held to get children excited about football, there should be something held to get children excited about reading. By creating the Read Across America, they were able to increase communication between residential and school communities. They also provided an event that children could look forward to. This year the celebration was held on March 1st, and the Fairfield County schools participated. Schools opened their doors to guest readers from across the state.
