Hearts For Us

Story by: Jamara GreenStudent Journalist

On Friday, February 1st, community leader, Belva Bush Belton, was recognized by the Winnsboro Downtown Merchants for her outstanding contributions to minimize poverty in our community. The Donut Guy, Sunshine and Serenity, and The Artist CoOp were a few of the businesses in attendance that praised Belton for her service. Belton worked with the merchants to organize Hearts for the Homeless. This project allowed community members to purchase red paper hearts from local Winnsboro businesses for one dollar. Those hearts were then displayed on the doors and windows of local businesses.

This project raised 171 dollars for the homeless closet that Belton manages. The closet began in 2001 and has provided children with food, clothing, school supplies, and other items. Business leaders recognized that poverty is a problem in Fairfield County, and with the efforts of everyone, can be resolved. Belton also welcomes clothing, furniture, monetary donations, and other useful contributions from local community members. The closet is located at 250 Roosevelt Street, Winnsboro, SC and is open every Wednesday from 8:30 am-11:30 am.
