Fairfield County 4-Hers participate in South Carolina 4-H Engineering Challenge. The 4-H South Carolina Engineering Challenge was held on Saturday March 30 at the South Carolina State Fair Grounds. 4-Hers from across the state participated in the challenge that focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities. The guest speaker for the day was Miss Clemson, Morgan Nichols. Ms. Nichols, whose platform is STEM and Workforce Development, stressed the importance of being “STEM Strong” in order to compete in today’s challenging job market. Students participated in challenges like Bridge Building, Coding, Rocketry, Legos and Photography. There was also a mystery challenge where 4-hers were unable to learn the details of their challenge until arriving at the event. Participants and family members also had a chance to visit the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Fair which provided the latest trends in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. Over 400 participants and family members attended the event.

Fairfield County 4-Hers participated in the challenge as volunteers and participants. Fairfield County 4-H was also responsible for providing The Mars Map for the event. The Mars Map was donated to Fairfield County by the Buzz Aldrin Foundation. The Buzz Aldrin Foundation provides the Mars Map as means to increase knowledge in STEM for children and youth. The giant 25X25 Mars Map allows children and youth to explore the surface of Mars while learning more about NASA and the Space Program.
