McMillan wins Book Challenge

Myah’s Energy Enlightenment, by Myah McMillan, was selected as the winner of the 2019 Children’s Book Challenge, sponsored by EnlightenSC an educational initiative of the state’s independent, consumer-owned electric cooperatives. The competition challenges fifth grade students to write and illustrate stories that focus on the impact of electricity in his or her life, communities and the state. McMillan was surprised during an assembly last week at Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science, where she is a fifth-grade student. Bruce Bacon, CEO of Fairfield Electric Cooperative, presented McMillan with a check for $500 in celebration of her accomplishment. “Myah demonstrated creativity and an understanding of the role of electrification in South Carolina through her text and illustrations.” said Courtney Epting, a representative of EnlightenSC, “It was a pleasure reading her book and celebrating her accomplishments.”

McMillan’s book was selected as the regional winner in February. She was one of 12 finalists out of more than 300 submissions. Her book will be published and distributed to elementary schools throughout the state. South Carolina’s electric cooperatives have been committed to powering rural communities since 1938. Th is concern for communities, and the future of our youth, has carried forward to today. By inspiring students to learn about the history of electricity in our state, S.C.’s electric co-ops hope to spark a passion for critical thinking in the minds of tomorrow’s energy leaders.
