Story by: Tracie SwilleyContributor

On Tuesday, April 9, 2019, ninety students were chosen out of more than three hundred-fi ft y applicants from the state of South Carolina, to participate in STEM Signing Day which was held at the University of South Carolina Alumni Center in Columbia. Boeing, BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance, and Tallo were event sponsors. Two seniors from Fairfi eld Central High School, Jeffery Feaster and Nhandi Long-Shipman, were selected to participate. Students came to the stage and signed as their name was called. Their signatures signifi ed their plans to major in a STEM related fi eld at a two or four-year institution of higher learning. Th e students also visited with their representatives at the Statehouse and were recognized in the Senate, as the House was not in session at that time.

Our two students had the opportunity to see their senator, Senator Mike Fanning, as he was hard at work presenting before the Senate when they arrived. Th e goal of STEM Signing Day is to motivate students to major in STEM fields and return to South Carolina to continue to strengthen our economy, as well as recruit new businesses. Th e presenters noted that this was their third signing class, and one of the strongest classes academically. We are pleased to have two students represent Fairfield Central High School, Fairfield County School District and Fairfield County.
