SCAM ALERT! FAKE DMV TEXTS/EMAILS CIRCULATING
Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens about a fraudulent message posing as the South Carolina DMV that is currently circulating.
The message claims:
You have an outstanding traffic ticket.
Your license or registration will be suspended.
You must pay immediately to avoid penalties.
It provides a link to “pay now.”
THIS IS A SCAM. Here’s how to recognize it:
Suspicious link. The link (example: scdmv.gov-tolliq.cc) is NOT a legitimate government website. Official SC DMV websites end in .gov (example: scdmvonline.com or sc.gov domains). Scammers use lookalike domains to trick you
Urgency & Threats: Scammers try to create panic: “Final Notice,” “Immediate payment required,” “License suspension." Legitimate agencies do not threaten you like this via text or email.
Generic Language: There is no case number, no specific violation details—just vague threats.
Unusual Fees: References to things like “toll booth transfers” or odd service fees are red flags.
What You Should Do:
Do not click the link.
Do not enter personal or payment information.
Delete the message.
If you’re concerned, contact the South Carolina DMV directly using a verified phone number or website—not the one in the message.
Report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov or contact your local law enforcement.
