Being the sports manager for our Journalism class has been full of surprises and learning experiences! From creating interview questions, organizing interviews with athletes from each FCHS sport, photography, and researching my favorite athlete--Tom Brady, I am fully convinced that taking Journalism in high school is going to complement my Sports Journalism major at South Carolina State University.
My sports assistant for baseball interviews was Tamari Davis, a Journalism 2 student. Check out what each athlete shared:
Bradford Trapp
What or who inspired you to play baseball? How so?
Baseball is a tradition in my family. I am mostly inspired by my uncle Justin Trapp.
What position do you play and what is the most difficult thing about it?
I play the whole outfield, but I mainly play center and right field. It's not really that hard, but for the center position, you have to be really fast.
What is your pregame routine?
I just listen to music. Simple.
How do you stay motivated after making a mistake?
I keep pushing myself and just never give up.
Mason Nelums
What or who inspired you to play baseball? How so?
My big brother inspires me. I'm always watching him play, and when we were growing up, I wanted to be like him. We played a lot together when we were younger.
What position do you play and what is the most difficult thing about it?
I play shortstop and the hardest things are getting to the ball quickly, making good throws, and doing well under pressure.
What is your pregame routine?
I make sure I get something good to eat, warm up with my team, and listen to music.
How do you stay motivated after making a mistake?
I just listen to my coaches, shake it off, and focus on the next play
Jay’Shawn Worthy
What or who inspired you to play baseball? How so?
It was Coach Larry Perry during my first year playing. It was his first year as well, so we grew together as coach and player.
What position do you play and what is the most difficult thing about it?
I play a lot of 3rd base and the most difficult thing is the hot corner.
What is your pregame routine?
I make sure I have the pre-game meal and stretch.
How do you stay motivated after making a mistake?
In baseball, you get a lot of the same plays, so you just make the next play a great one and you will be alright.
Logan Watkins
What or who inspired you to play baseball? How so?
My dad inspired me because he played, so he was able to teach me.
What position do you play and what is the most difficult thing about it?
I play first base. The most difficult thing is having to pick up the ball in certain situations.
What is your pregame routine?
Music does it for me every time!
How do you stay motivated after making a mistake?
I stay positive and try again.
We look forward to sharing more athletes' interviews in upcoming issues!
